This Serapi wool example is an antique rug with a dominant stepped medallion and an all-over floral lattice. At 457 x 686 cm the scale allows the layered guard borders and contrasting navy and neutral fields to play against a warm rust ground. The weave shows medium wear and even abrash, a softened pile and restrained edge wear that lend a cultivated patina. The piece reads as a considered object of use and making, its motifs and palette holding a composed, archival character. Circa 1885 - 1900. The softened surface retains a quiet, tactile character shaped by time.
