This Sultanabad antique rug measures 310 x 422 cm and reflects the generous, composed character for which the type is known. An ivory ground is worked with scrolling florals and branching arabesques, all enclosed by a rich rust red border with layered ornament and repeated medallions. Gold, navy, taupe and warm red notes sit across the design, giving the rug depth and restraint in equal measure. Low distress leaves the surface softly aged rather than heavily worn. Circa 1885 - 1900, it presents a graceful balance of pattern, colour and patina, with wool giving the whole piece a grounded, tactile presence.
