This Farahan Sarouk antique rug measures 318 x 422 cm and shows a densely woven floral composition in deep navy, oxblood, rust, camel and ivory against a dark ground. The field is filled with scrolling vine work and small repeating blossoms, all contained by a broad border of related floral motifs and slender guard bands. Wool gives the surface warmth and texture, while the low distress level appears as mellowed colour, light wear and an aged, even patina. Circa 1885 - 1900, it feels collected and composed, with strong contrast and a richly detailed rhythm throughout.
