This Needle Point example is rendered in wool on a pale cream ground, a diminutive pastoral medallion with two figures, two hounds and a floral wreath. The stitched surface reads like a miniature tapestry; muted greens, pinks and warm ochres sit against the soft ground. Wear is evident at the perimeter with fraying and some surface abrasion, lending an honest patina to the piece. Considered as an antique rug, it demonstrates the decorative, picture-like sensibility of late 19th to early 20th century needlework. Circa 1850 - 1865. Exact size: 61 x 61 cm.
