A Farahan Sarouk in wool, in red, brown and gold, this antique rug measures 381 x 610 cm. A pronounced central medallion sits within a field of scrolling vine and palmette motifs, framed by multiple floral borders and shaped corner spandrels. Low distress leaves a soft, tactile pile with gentle abrash and a mellow patina that clarifies motif and border work. The overall effect is architectural and quietly refined, the layered colours reading as a considered, age-softened surface. Circa 1890 - 1910.
