This Aubusson, 371 x 389 cm, reads as a painted field softened by time. A pale centre is enclosed by a scalloped cartouche and four ornate corner medallions, their roses and foliate sprays set against a rose-tinged outer border. Cream, pink and neutral tones show subtle abrash and a well-worn wool fibre with medium distress that has yielded a quiet, brushed colour. The ornament retains a delicate, painterly hand while the surface evidences centre fold lines and gentle edge wear. An antique rug bearing a calm domestic patina; Circa 1890 - 1910, it reads as the work of atelier weaving sensibilities.
