A finely woven Sarouk in wool, this 274 x 335 cm antique rug shows an allover floral vine network with palmette centres and scrolling arabesques. The warm neutral ground and deep brown outlines sit against touches of gold and muted red, the colours mellowed by age. Low distressing and an even pile give the surface a tactile, sensorial quality while preserving the clarity of the border pattern. Circa 1900 - 1915, the composition reads as considered and heritage-aware, a characteristic example of early 20th century Sarouk workshop practice rendered in wool and restrained colour.
