An expansive Savonnerie in wool, this antique rug presents a softened red ground with gold and neutral colourways and a restrained repeating lattice within an oval centre. Acanthus scrolls and floral spandrels animate the field while a series of borders (laurel chevrons and block bands) gives structure to the composition. The pile shows medium wear and a gentle abrash across the centre, creating a mellow, tactile surface that reads of long use and careful craft. Circa 1900 - 1920. Dimensions: 503 x 706 cm. The softened surface retains a quiet, tactile character shaped by time.
