This Mahal antique rug, 323 x 376 cm, is composed in a faded floral register of rust brown, powder blue, sage and muted ivory. The field is filled with scattered blossoms and trailing vine work, then enclosed by a finely patterned border that frames the design without crowding it. Heavy wear has softened the wool pile, lending the surface a dry, timeworn look and a pale, distressed bloom across the darker ground. Circa 1915 - 1930, this piece shows the calm, expansive character often found in Mahal rugs, with a restrained palette and an atmospheric, gently faded finish.
