The Mahal shows an all-over floral field of palmettes and scrolling vines in muted neutral, brown and gold colourways. Of wool fibre, this antique rug shows low distress; the surface has settled to a soft, tactile patina with subtle abrash that accentuates depth. A sequence of narrow borders contains the busy field, creating a composed edge around the medallion-like motifs. Circa 1900 - 1915. Measuring 267 x 361 cm, the rug balances evident age with restrained wear, its layered colour and quiet symmetry reflecting the measured grammar of Mahal design.
