Softened to a warm, muted red colourway, this Mahal antique rug measures 244 x 353 cm and is a wool piece with a patinated surface and medium wear. The field presents an allover palmette and vine-lattice arrangement framed by a wide foliate border; abrash and faded cream highlights lift motifs from the mellow brown ground. Edges are softened and the pile reads low and tactile, the surface bearing the calm irregularities of age. Circa 1885 - 1900.
